Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipWe created this documentary and our impact campaign so that young adults with disabilities will feel more seen and heard and find their own mentors.
I hope The Ride Ahead helps other young disabled adults to find the same opportunities that I've had for healthcare, inclusive education, college, assistive technology, jobs, making friends, and independent living.
Disabled people have been marginalized, segregated, and treated quite cruelly throughout history.
There's been a lot of gains that have been made in recent decades with laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act, the IDEA in the schools, different supports and services through Medicaid that help people live in their communities, in their homes.
All those are being threatened right now.
All those are being challenged.
This film comes at a time when people with disabilities and people without disabilities all need to be advocating for equal access, equal rights for people with disabilities.
This film embodies that journey.
Disabled people should have their voices heard and we should be able to tell our own stories.
As someone who struggles to communicate, this film is incredibly meaningful to me because it is making my experience visible and it is getting my voice, and others' voices, heard.
This film, although it's funny, although it's told in a very kind of informal storytelling way, it very much embodies the fight that disabled people are engaging in today to live full equal lives in American society.
