Hi.
I'm first year medical student, Alessandra Balis.
Ever felt too embarrassed to tell your doc how much you drink or do street drugs?
Take leftover meds or supplements like Saint John's wort?
Did you know our genetic makeup influences the cytochrome P450 system?
Cool name Which affects how well or poorly our body makes use of drugs, including prescriptions.
And did you know that different substances we ingest affect the P450?
Chronic alcohol use antibiotics.
Saint John's wort can all boost it while acute alcohol use antidepressants, indigestion meds, and even grapefruit juice can all squash it, which can lead to side effects.
Some tiny, but some.
Whoa.
Really nasty.
Even kaboom.
No, I didn't know.
Heck, I just learned all about that myself.
So forget embarrassed, think settle P450 and just share it all.
I'm Alessandra Bali with my medical student minute.
