Hi, I'm Maggie McGrath a third year student at upstate Norton College of Medicin with my medical student minute before bacteria were discovered, surgeons operated without washing their hands.
Now we know there are between 10 to 100 trillion bacteria inside us and on our skin.
New research shows some are exceptionally clever at disguise through molecular mimicry.
They camouflage themselves to look like proteins and other structures in our cells.
Unfortunately, this can trick our immune system into autoimmunity, attacking healthy cells and tissues, and plays a role as a trigge for the development of certain autoimmune diseases lik rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
No doubt other factors are involved, but this shows how important it is to wash our hands and make sure we're staying healthy.
