State wildlife officials say 90 bears were harvested in the first day alone.
The most came from Sussex County.
No surprise there.
It's where the population is largest.
But bear sightings have been reported in all 21 counties.
The controversial event is one way the state tries to control the black bear population, which has doubled over the last six years from 1500 to 3000.
The first phase began Monday, and it's only open to bow hunters.
Now, later this week, the hunt will open to archers and two muzzle loader rifles that end on Saturday.
The second phase will run from December 9th to the 14th.
New Jersey's Fish and Game Council expects 500 total bears will be harvested this year.
The hunt was reinstated in 2022 by Governor Murphy following a four year ban.
The Animal Protection League of New Jersey has continuously called on the Murphy administration to put a permanent ban on the practice.
