Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwe reported last week that 71 classroom teachers and staff and four administrative staff from the East Orange School District are facing mid-year layoffs these cuts the result of a budget deficit that East Orange administrators told us stands around $8 million although other numbers have been reported that news came as a shock to community members and to many of the teachers themselves several of whom were just hired by the district this summer in a contentious meeting last week newly appointed superintendent Christopher Irving explained that mistakes were made in the budget that was presented to him when he started in July and he filled positions that were never actually budgeted for but east Orange's mistake is promising news for districts like Patterson and Jersey City that have faced major teacher shortages this year in fact they're using virtual teachers to fill the gaps in several of their classrooms well they can now hire from the pool of 70 plus teachers leaving East Orange the superintendent has said he'll help each each teacher who's been let go transition into other districts those layoffs will take effect in December [Music]
