and I like to play country music.
Honestly, I never thought of music being any type of income or anything like that professionally.
I sang in choir in high school.
My teacher, Mrs. Larsen, back in like '90, '91, '92, great teacher, got me singing a little bit more in choir, like the National Anthem at football games, things like that, and I just decided that I love singin' And that's kind of where it started for me.
The older I got, never once considered singin' professionally or anything like that until about '96.
In '96 I started a garage band called Southbound.
We practiced for 8 hours at a time in this garage out in Brandon, North Dakota.
Go home, go to work the next morning, go back out there and practice more and that's pretty much how it started.
My first actual show getting paid, I think it was like $600, and we drove all the way to Pollock, South Dakota.
I found out that was what I wanted to do, just having fun on stage and performing.
So I thank Mrs. Larsen and my choir teacher back in high school for getting me started.
So that's where it all began for me.
♪ We got no place to go we got no place to be ♪ ♪ So let's just lay here and let's be lazy ♪ ♪ Girl I'm so hypnotized by your soft green eyes ♪ ♪ Let's just lay here and let's be ♪ ♪ Lazy ♪ " Let's be Lazy," this song [laughs] was a great song to write.
One day I was sittin' on the couch watchin' the Minnesota Twins during a baseball game, and my wife, she was cleaning the house, and I felt horrible sitting there, I'm like, I'm looking at her, and I'm like, Heather, relax.
I laugh about it because I can still see her face like... you know, like the face that you get.
I didn't want to interrupt her, but I felt really bad just sittin' there and watching the Twins, and she'd pass by me, and I'd be like, honey, come and sit next to me, just relax.
Let's be lazy, let's be lazy together.
I kept saying that, so I flipped it around a little bit when I wrote this song, and I thought, well, what if I walk in a room, and she's layin' on the couch, and she's watchin' TV all by herself, and I thought, I'm gonna write a song about that, just kinda walkin' in and seeing her sittin' there all by herself.
And I just want to slide up right next to her.

They taught me how to drive, they taught me to live off the land, man.
Livin' out in the country on the farm was where I-- they had a lot of cows and pigs, and to be honest with you man, it was so fun.
I started thinkin' about all the old times, and my grandma and grandpa, they always told me to do what I want to do.
That's the other thing, listening to your grandma and grandpa when they tell you don't take no for an answer.
Do what you want to do.
That's what I did, and honestly that's why I'm here right now and doing what I love to do.
It's not about money, it's not about fame.

I wrote this song for my wife Heather.
I sang this on our wedding day, July 31st.

She saved my life and I think I saved hers, and I love her with all my heart, and I try to show that every day that I'm alive.
And if you listen to the words of the song-- we're not guaranteed tomorrow.
I put that in the song, that I might not be here tomorrow.
So every time I close my eyes-- will I wake up in the morning, I hope I do because I want to spend another day with you.
I wrote that song for her, and I hope it touches the heartstrings of everybody that has a significant other that they lay next to at night, dream about, make dreams with, make memories with, 'cause that's really what it's all about.
