It really always goes back to when I was really young when I really responded to music was when I first heard Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA tape riding in my dad's 1982 diesel Cadillac.
In 1999 we had the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen come to the Fargodome.
my dad took me to go see both.
I was about 5 or 6 years old, and ever since, especially Bruce Springsteen-- that changed my life.
I didn't pick up guitar till I was about 13, 14, and ever since then I've done nothing else other than play guitar.
So it's been my main thing for many years.
Most of the stuff I like is old music like '60s-- the Beatles, the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers which is an old country band-- highly influential.
And I love Elliot Smith, you'll hear a lot of Elliot Smith influence in my music.
And Townes Van Zant and Bob Dylan.
So I have a lot of musical influences.
My main element what I always go by with writing is melody.
I'm a massive believer in melody, but that process, you can't always rely on that.
Lately I've been starting with lyrics more, and then the melody comes to me.
"Madeline" is a song I wrote when I was 22, and that was another melody first song.
The lyrics are a little abstract, but I wrote it in a sense that it's kind of a metaphor for getting away from addiction.

There's so much great music.
Tune your ear to lots of music that nobody's heard of.
Definitely always keep your ear open, don't shut anything out.
If something sounds weird, if there's music-- oh, that's different-- you've got to take something away from it you like.
There could be something, or it will grow on you.
If you don't like it now, you'll like it again some other time.
"Learn from the Girls," that's the first song I ever wrote starting with a title.
When I was 23 I had this list of titles in my phone, and I had it written in my list of titles.
I got "Learn From the Girl," and I just started strumming-- I wanted to write like a '60s pop song.
The whole song basically came out in one sitting, the chord progression, the melody pretty much came out.
I think that's definitely my most, my popiest song.
