Welcome to TTC Extra.
It's the Oscar snub being called shocking and bitterly ironic.
Ryan Gosling was nominated for his performance as Ken in the Barbie movie, but Margot Robbie was not nominated for best actress and director Greta Gerwig was not nominated for best director.
Gosling and America Ferrera, who was nominated for Best Supporting actress, both called the snubs disappointing.
Snubs?
I mean, I don't.
I'm just going to throw this out there to anyone who wants to talk.
I saw Barbie.
I thought it was a cute movie.
I thought it had a great message.
But was it Oscar material?
No, It was like a human cartoon or something.
Anyway, your thoughts?
I don't see how we would consider Barbie Oscar material, particularly considering all the films that did so well and really were good this year.
Barbie would not be on my list.
Yeah, I agree with both of you.
This is really not something over which I think we should anguish terribly much.
Everybody involved in that movie did very well and will continue to.
I think that the producers, etc.
are making is that, you know, this was a history making movie in terms of the amount of money it brought in.
But so are all the all the animated, super animated over animated superhero movies.
And they're not considered to be Oscar material.
So these people give.
Each other way too darn many awards for.
every other other week, right?
You know, it's another awards ceremony.
It's like, my God, get over yourselves.
I'm not a big film person.
I will acknowledge a couple of things.
One.
I do know that it is more challenging for women directors as a category in kind of the old boy Hollywood network.
The other thing that I just think it's kind of fun to see, I saw this statistic last night in Harper's magazine.
They find all these fun statistics.
53% of women don't want to go on a date with a guy who would refuse to see the Barbie movie.
And I just bring that up here because it's like, okay, if you're I mean, it kind of goes back to who the awards shows are trying to appeal to.
That's a question for them.
I don't take a position, but I will silently observe that if they want to be relevant with a demographic, it may be key to be tuned in to what they care about.
I got in on all the Barbie hype last summer.
I had a lot of fun with it.
I got like pink blazers.
I went to a private screening with my friends.
It was so much fun.
There was so much hype around it.
But I did find it was a little slow in some parts of the film, and I'm not a real big film buff.
I would I would just say it was fine, but the hype around it was way more fun.
I do feel bad for Greta Gerwig who I think, yeah, like Erin made the point there's an old boys club.
I also agree with Nan that there are too many too many award shows in Hollywood.
Hollywood loves itself.
So on the one hand, the irony here is just it's it is crushing, but everybody will be fine.
We will go on and have another great summer.
I hope a great movies that drive is out there and make us reconnect with our fellow community members.
Thank you all.
